Beware Of Buying A Cheap Automated Garage Door

Every company selling automated garage doors are required by law, to ensure that they are fit for purpose and safe to use. However, with businesses struggling in the current climate some less reputable companies are trying to cut corners.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

John Ruskin

Here's our useful Checklist - Before You Buy your automated garage door:

  • Is the company registered with the DHF (Door & Hardware Federation)? This ensures buyers safety and legal requirements for installation.

  • Does the company provide all services required for the installation. e.g. Electrics, earth works, building modifications. Some companies will require you to organise preparation of the site.

  • Do the Garage Doors and parts carry the CE mark? This indicates compliance to safety health, and environmental standards.

  • How long has the company been trading? Some new companies are setting up with the sole intention of installing cheap imitations with poor standards and little knowledge or skill.

  • Does the Garage Roller Door have a Leading-Edge Safety Sensor? This is crucial for your safety and will prevent accidents from happening.

  • Are Safety Devices such as Anti Drop mechanisms and Obstruction Detection Systems included? Some companies do not include these, but they can protect you and your family from serious harm.

  • Who is their parts supplier? There are a number of replica products on the market with cheap Control Boards, Remote Controls, Motors, Brackets and Hinges that do not meet DHF standards and which do not carry the CE mark.

  • Check that the manufacturers are reputable companies and beware of the poor quality copies that are now on the market, especially those "Made in China".

The safety of any Automated Garage Door System is only as good as its installation, and you deserve the Best Quality, the most Secure and the most Safe system.
